Anna Rank
Visual Artist
Anna Rank is a Uruguayan artist. She lived and studied in New York for twelve years and currently resides in Argentina. She belongs to the second generation of the Torres García Workshop.
She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Parsons School of Design. She studied Art Education at Bank Street College, NY. From 1983 to 1993 she studied drawing and painting with Julio Alpuy in New York. In 1986 she studied printmaking with Krishna Reddy at New York University, and in 1984 she took “Aesthetics” with Jorge Romero Brest at the Center for Advanced Studies of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. She studied composition with Antonio Pezzino and with Hilda Varela. She graduated in Fine Arts from the Pedro Figari School.
She received an Artist-in-Residence grant from the Mozarteum Argentino at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, in 2014. She created installations for the International Vigil for Peace at the Central Park Bandshell and the Queens Museum of Art, NY, 2009–2010. She was awarded the O.E.A. Scholarships in Washington DC and the Helena Rubinstein Foundation Scholarship in New York, 1991–1992. She was Artist-in-Residence at the Altos de Chavón Foundation in 1990 and received the Bacardi–Citibank–Wang Prize in Puerto Rico in 1984.
She currently teaches in her studio, both in-person and online, in Buenos Aires. She taught at the Guillermo Roux Workshop from 1997 to 2017; at the National School of Fine Arts “Ernesto de la Cárcova” between 1997 and 1998; at the Queens Museum of Art and the NYC Department of Education from 2005 to 2007; at the Catholic University of Uruguay from 1994 to 1996; at the Altos de Chavón School of Design in the Dominican Republic from 1990 to 1991; and at the Bronx Museum from 1988 to 1992.
My work is inspired by the teachings of Joaquín Torres García and his disciples, who guided me toward an organic geometry that transcends imitation and seeks to reveal invisible structures. His constructive universalism taught me to create from a composition that is both rational and sensuous.
1993 – Master of Fine Arts in Painting, Parsons The New School for Design, New York.
Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education for primary and secondary levels, Parsons The New School for Design, New York.
Computer Animation, Parsons School of Design, New York.
